- “Thanks! That really puts a spring in my step!”
- —Blockafeller, Yoshi's Crafted World
Blockafellers[1] are a family of robot-like characters in Yoshi's Crafted World. They have springy arms, heads with a flower on top and a large nose, a singular 'foot' made out of a bottle cap, and bodies made out of cardboard boxes. All Blockafellers except for the one in Sunshine Station start out without any energy in the middle of the path, with their appearance being a box with a meter in front of it. Once they are given the required amount of Smiley Flowers to recharge them, they unlock the world and stay on the far left spot on the map of the world, or to the left of the boss battles. Their color scheme changes depending on the Blockafeller. Their name appears to be a combination of 'block' and 'Rockefeller.' Three types of Blockafeller exist in the game. The first kind is the standard kind that appears in each world. The second is a larger variant known as Torques. These ones have two bottle cap feet instead of one, lack springy arms (having them directly attached to their bodies instead) and wear clothing such as overalls, sunhats, or sunglasses. These Blockafellers appear on each boss battle island. Finally, there is a single elderly Blockafeller with a cane and elf hat named Crumples who appears twice in the game, once to tell the player they can choose the order to search for the red, purple, and yellow Dream Gems, and again once the player collects said Dream Gems to access the final few areas. After talking with him in both of these encounters, he flies away with balloons on his back. After the player beats a level, the world's Blockafeller assigns them a task that involves going back to the same level to collect a souvenir for them, such as collecting five cardboard cows in Rail-Yard Run. When the task is beaten, the player can choose to continue playing the level or to exit it. When the level is exited after the task is completed, the world's Blockafeller gives the player a Smiley Flower. A Blockafeller costume can also be unlocked by finding Sprout in every level.

Trivia[edit]- In the demo for Yoshi's Crafted World, the Blockafeller in Sunshine Station is named Fin instead of Coal, whereas his brother who is named Fin in the full game is not present in the demo at all. This can be discovered by speaking with the Blockafeller first before playing Rail-Yard Run.

Twelve frames for a single second
To produce stop-motion animation, you position models by hand, take a photo, move them a bit, take another photo, and so on. You have to keep track of how Yoshi and the objects around him should be moving as you photograph frame by frame, so it’s a pretty painstaking process.
No, really, there’s a LOT of jumping. Jumping to Victory! Now there’s a level name that springs into action — with all the Bungee Plants stalking Yoshi, Ukikis hopping around, and fragile paper blocks decorating deep ponds, you’ll certainly be jumping for dear life.
12 photos are needed to create one second’s worth of animation. Put the above photos together and what do you get?
Behind the scenes
Oct 19, 2015 Yoshi's Woolly World Bundle - Wii U. The game play stays in line with the current line of WiiU games of proprietary nintendo games where you have your base world and you jump to the other worlds or levels to play the game. It plays a lot like the super mario brothers games for wii where its a side scroller and has that annoying game play. —Blockafeller, Yoshi's Crafted World. Blockafellers are a family of robot-like characters in Yoshi's Crafted World. They have springy arms, heads with a flower on top and a large nose, a singular 'foot' made out of a bottle cap, and bodies made out of cardboard boxes. A Yoshi's Woolly World Party for my son who turned 5 years old. We went with a white/green colour scheme and also some yarn balls and eggs for decoration. I made some felt Yoshi flowers and we played theme related games. Acorn Forest is a forest world in Yoshi's Crafted World. It consists of the three levels Weighing Acorns, Jumping to Victory, and Spike the Piranha. Completing it earns Yoshi the orange Dream Gem. The leap to a 3D world makes Woolly World feel almost like a 2.5D platformer, and there’s at least one instance when the camera pans away from the traditional side-on angle: when Yoshi reaches.
Let’s take a look at what happens during the animation process. This is the set where the animation takes place. With all the tools and equipment around, it gets kind of cluttered.
If you look closely at the photos, you’ll see that Yoshi and his pals are held in place by metal clamps. These are called “rigs,” and they’re used to keep objects in the positions they need to be.
The many faces of Yoshi
During the shorts, you may have noticed how Yoshi has all sorts of different facial expressions. How do they do that?
Here are some of the parts used for Yoshi’s eyes. These can be switched in-between frames to let Yoshi blink, change expressions, and more.
The Yoshi featured in the shorts looks a lot like the Yarn Yoshi amiibo figure, but it’s actually a little different.
See how the arms and legs are longer? Plus, there are metal joints embedded inside the stop-motion Yoshi model, which makes it stiff and heavy. Thanks to these joints, the animators are able to make Yoshi hold poses and move with precision.
Photographing frames, rigs and all
Check out the difference between the original photos and the versions used in the animation. The rigs used to keep things in place stay in the shot and are then edited out later. That’s right – stop motion may seem like an old-fashioned method of animation, but it actually involve some pretty state-of-the-art image editing.

Here’s a behind the scenes clip we got our hands on to show you what the animation looked like during production.
A message from the production team
Here’s a message from Mr. Minegishi at dwarf, the animation studio, who lent his expertise to producing these animations:
“Stop motion Yoshi acts in his own special way, a way that’s different to the Yoshi you typically see in games. We hope that players will enjoy seeing Yoshi in a brand new light.”
In-game features
The game contains 30 different animated shorts. Each day you can watch a new one, so you’ll probably want to try to play at least once a day. You’ll also get quizzed on the movies you watch. You can try to answer the questions correctly to get Beads that are sure to help Yoshi along the way!
The lovable Poochy, who appears in the shorts, will also be getting his very own amiibo figure (sold separately or as part of a special bundle with Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World). It doesn’t move like Poochy does in the animated videos, but by scanning it at any time during a course you can call Poochy to your side, letting you continue the adventure with a faithful companion.
So if you ever need a little break from platforming in Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World, you can check out the stop-motion animated shorts! You can check out some of the videos and learn more about the game at the official Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World website.
