While the Wii U seemed to be nearly overflowing with platformers based on Nintendo's most beloved mascots, the Nintendo Switch by comparison is still lacking a few of the most important platforming pals. Enter Yoshi, for Yoshi's Crafted World, which appears to be exactly the kind of wholesome Nintendo action platforming that fans of Nintendo's development studios love. This is the same Yoshi game that was originally announced at E3 2017, and after a long development, its release appears to finally be approaching.

Here's everything we know so far about what you'll get to do in Yoshi's Crafted World:

What is Yoshi's Crafted World?

Yoshi's Crafted World is the latest Yoshi title from Good-Feel, following Yoshi's Woolly World for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. It shares many similarities with its predecessor, the most obvious being that it's another Yoshi action-platforming game. But both games make use of a crafts-like aesthetic, with Woolly World focusing on fabrics and Crafted World using paper items in the style of a miniature diorama. Most of Woolly World's mechanics, enemies, and concepts make returns in Crafted World, though the game and its levels are entirely new.

The Nintendo eShop usually gives customers points that are worth five percent of their purchase, but thanks to Target’s muck-up, they got points worth $3, meaning they racked up $2 more than they paid for the game to begin with.Target released statement about the so-called flash sale of Yoshi’s Crafted World, explaining, “Due to an unexpected error, the item is incorrectly priced at this time. One hour later, the price for Yoshi’s Crafted World went back up to its original $50 price tag because, according to Target, the $1 listing was a technical error.Those who managed to purchase Yoshi’s Crafted World for the Nintendo Switch earned 300 gold points. A small number of items on the site may be mispriced, described inaccurately, or unavailable. I think I fell in love with Yoshi’s Crafted World when I discovered the costumes. You don’t know cute until you’ve seen Yoshi running around the place in a little shonky cardboard cow outfit. Essentially, once you climb in, move the analog stick up and down to aim your punches and then hold B and release to perform a powerful punch. Tapping B will give you a standard, weak punch but it will be much quicker to. Many different crafts appear in the background and foreground of almost every level in Yoshi's Crafted World. Yoshi can throw an egg at one to receive coins; for most crafts, hitting one sends it flying into the air, and Yoshi can earn more coins by throwing multiple eggs at it. One of the big draws of Yoshi's Crafted World is this craft aesthetic, which can manifest in interesting platforming sections where you're leaping across rolled bits of paper, flowers made of wood and string, and facing enemies that look like a 5-year-old made them in art class!

Is there a story?

Like many other Yoshi games, there is a light story guiding your adventures across Yoshi's island home. Baby Bowser and Kamek appear in the Yoshi's happy home and steal the coveted Sundream Stone, scattering its gems across multiple worlds. As Yoshi, you'll have to track down the Sundream Stone and stop a horde of Baby Bowser and Kamek's minions along the way. That means lots of collectibles and hidden secrets, just like in past Yoshi games!

How do you play?

Like past Yoshi games, Yoshi's main abilities are his flutter jump and his ability to eat enemies and turn them into eggs. As a platformer, you'll need to use Yoshi's ability to jump and flutter jump to climb and cross levels. But enemies will fly, run, and roll at you as you go, so you'll also have to work your way forward by eating them, turning them into eggs, and then using those eggs to throw at other enemies or at certain spots on the map to reveal hidden platforms or secrets.

And like its predecessor Yoshi's Woolly World, Yoshi's Crafted World will feature unlockable Yoshi color palettes you can swap to as you collect them, allowing you to play as an adorably soft Yoshi in any number of different colors and patterns.

What's this about flipping levels?

The big 'gimmick' of Yoshi's Crafted World is that levels can be 'flipped.' Levels are designed on a three-dimensional plane, with enemies in the foreground and background and with the ability to flip the level backward and play from the other side. This is occasionally done as a part of the regular gameplay of the level, but you can also play any level from back to front flipped over after you beat it forward.

This doesn't just apply to the game's flip mechanics, though. Because the game is a 2D platformer on a 3D plane, you'll often find yourself moving forward and back in a three-dimensional space to avoid enemies, collect items and coins, and platform through obstacles.

This will surely result in some interesting challenges and platforming puzzles, so keep an eye out for ways flipping the level can change your perspective!

Can I play with a friend?

You can! Yoshi's Crafted World includes the ability to play with two players at once, each in control of a Yoshi. You can help one another get through all the levels for a bit of extra assistance you wouldn't otherwise have while playing solo.

Yarrctopus Docks is the second world in Yoshi's Crafted World. It is a combination of a beach and a port. It consists of the two levels Many Fish in the Sea and Pirate Pier. Completing it unlocks Go-Go Land. While pirate ships are found all over Pirate Pier, this Flipside Souvenir’s one-of-a-kind. Keep an eye out for a red sail-adorned Pirate Ship just past the second checkpoint. Steamboat: This Flipside souvenir’s a sneaky one! It’s hiding behind some rocks jutting out of the bay, so simple circle around to spot it. After jumping up a few platforms, you will encounter a springy rope underneath 3 clusters of coins. You can time your jump so that you can go even higher thanks to the extra bounce from the rope.

When can I get it?

Yoshi's Woolly World is planned for launch on March 29, 2019 and will cost $59.99.

Yoshi

The hero of the game, Yoshi is a kind-hearted creature resembling a dinosaur. He is famous for being one of Mario's most trusted friends. Yoshi lives on Yoshi Island where his kind roam and play together. They are also known to protect the mysterious Sundream Stone, said to have the power to make wishes come true.

Poochy

Yoshi's lovable companion who accompanies him on the adventure. Yoshi must collect all three of Poochy's pups that are hidden in each level. They can be found by lilstening for their barking when close by.

Blockafeller Family

The Blockafeller Family consists of humanoid blocks that act as gatekeepers to each new area that Yoshi explores. They help Yoshi by giving him access to new challenges and objectives throughout his adventure.

Kamek and Baby Bowser

The wizard Kamek and Baby Bowser tried to steal the Sundream Stone in Yoshi Island but accidentally scattered its pieces throughout the papercraft world instead. Though failing in their original plan, Yoshi will definitely run into them as they race to recover the stones across the various worlds.

Gameplay

Yoshi's Crafted World is a side-scrolling platform game featuring 3D characters in a 2.5D environment. The game brings back gameplay elements from previous Yoshi games, such as Yoshi's ability to eat enemies and objectives, transform them into eggs, and hurl them across the level.

Front Side and Flip Side View

A new mechanic found in the game is Yoshi's ability to interact with the foreground and background of each level. Players will also be able to flip the view of their game, switching between the outside and inside of the environment to collect hidden objects and see secret passages.

Single and Multiplayer Modes

Yoshi's Crafted World offers both single and duo modes. In multiplayer, two players can work together to complete each level and make boss fights easier. The various mini games can also be played with another player in either versus or co-op play.

Mini Games

Shooting the Mole

The first mini game revealed in the gameplay trailer showed players shooting a mole that may appear from one of three holes. Players will have to anticipate which hole the mole will come out in order to shoot it. It looks like the mole needs to be shot three times to be knocked out.

Racing Mini Game

The second mini game shown in the trailer appears to be a racing game where players must collect as many coins as they can while trying to be first to reach the end of the course.

Yoshi's Crafted World's story begins in a papercraft version of Yoshi Island. While the Yoshis were at the topmost peak of the island, Kamek and Bowser Junior appeared and stole the Sundream Stone. This urged Yoshi to go on a quest to recover the stone and return it to the island.
